The Shape of Water
The idea to script “The Shape of Water” as a scientific love story was brilliant. Strange but good this film illustrated the beauty in being different! I enjoyed Elisa’s performance along with Octavia Spencer bringing a little light and laughter, but the neighbor for me in my opinion is Elisa’s bff. He supports her and sees her without judging, which is perfect for her because it is obvious that Elisa is not judgmental either. From a female gaze Elisa saw a need and she nurtured this creature who filled her fantasy in return. She saw him being abused and not help but to step in…in was the right thing to do. Even when it came time for Elisa and the creature to separate, she did the right thing even though she grown so fond of him. The power in this story line is that Elisa is mute but still managed to communicate with a creature of another species. Nonverbal communication is often overlooked but is such a vital asset for a group of people who are not acknowledged enough.
